Ten walls between you and the sin

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim listed ten reasons that give a servant patience against sin. This page turns each one into a wall you can build: his words in Arabic, the evidence, and a short drill you can do the moment the pull comes. Everything you write stays on your device.

Feeling the pull right now?

  1. Put the phone down or leave the room. Change your place first.
  2. Say aʿūdhu billāhi mina sh-shayṭāni r-rajīm.
  3. Pick one wall below and do its drill. Three honest minutes is enough to break the moment.
I need 3 minutes of hayāʾ
Naming it makes every drill personal. It never leaves this device, is never sent anywhere, and you can erase it at the bottom.

First: the three kinds of sabr

Ibn al-Qayyim, Ṭarīq al-Hijratayn wa Bāb as-Saʿādatayn, ed. al-Iṣlāḥī, 2/577

Translation (ours)Patience is of three kinds: patience away from sin so that he does not commit it, patience upon obedience until he carries it out, and patience through trials so that he does not complain about his Lord in them.

Away from sin. Holding back when the nafs pushes. This page is about this one.

Upon obedience. Staying consistent with salah, Quran and duties when it is hard.

Through trials. Holding steady in hardship without complaining about Allah.

Every sin is a bad habit. Not every bad habit is a sin.

A sin

Wrecks your day like any bad habit, and it is disobedience to the One whose help you need to reach anything.

A bad habit

Scrolling till 2am may not be haram, but it still steals your Fajr, your focus and your goals.

So staying away from sins is not a separate project from your goals. It removes the worst habits you have, and it removes what blocks Allah’s help. Ibn al-Qayyim says sins remove blessings (wall 3), and Allah says:

Qur'an

Qur'an, ar-Raʿd 13:11

Sahih International“For each one are successive [angels] before and behind him who protect him by the decree of Allah. Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. And when Allah intends for a people ill, there is no repelling it. And there is not for them besides Him any patron.”

Leave the sin for Allah, and you clear the road for His help with everything else you are working toward, in shā’ Allāh.

The ten walls

See how ugly it really is

Ibn al-Qayyim, Ṭarīq al-Hijratayn wa Bāb as-Saʿādatayn, ed. al-Iṣlāḥī, 2/588

Translation (ours)The first: the servant knowing how ugly, vile and low the sin is, and that Allah only forbade it to guard His servant and protect him from what is low and degrading, the way a caring father protects his child from what harms him. This reason alone is enough to make a sensible person leave it, even if no punishment had been attached to it.

A word from the Salaf

Abū Nuʿaym al-Aṣbahānī, Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ wa Ṭabaqāt al-Aṣfiyāʾ 5/223, biography of Bilāl ibn Saʿd; also reported by adh-Dhahabī, Siyar Aʿlām an-Nubalāʾ vol. 5, same biography

TranslationAl-Awzāʿī reported that Bilāl ibn Saʿd said: “Do not look at how small the sin is. Look at the One you are disobeying.”

The drill

Write ten honest lines about how ugly this sin really is. Not how it feels in the moment: what it is, what it does, what it has already cost you.

    Be shy before Allah

    Ibn al-Qayyim, Ṭarīq al-Hijratayn wa Bāb as-Saʿādatayn, ed. al-Iṣlāḥī, 2/588

Translation (ours)The second: shyness before Allah. When the servant truly knows that Allah is looking at him and standing over him, that he is in His sight and His hearing, and he has life in his heart and modesty, he becomes too ashamed before his Lord to expose himself to what angers Him.

    Qur'an

    Qur'an, al-ʿAlaq 96:14

Sahih International“Does he not know that Allah sees?”

    Hadith

    Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 50

Translation (ours)Asked about iḥsān, the Prophet ﷺ said: “That you worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then He surely sees you.”

    Hadith

    Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5223

Translation (ours)“Allah has ghayrah, and the ghayrah of Allah is that the believer does what Allah has forbidden.”

    The drill

Two parts. First, sit still for three minutes and think about one thing only: Allah is looking at me right now, He hears me, and He knows what I was about to do. No phone, no music, no distraction. Then write five lines.

    3:00

      Protect what He gave you

      Ibn al-Qayyim, Ṭarīq al-Hijratayn wa Bāb as-Saʿādatayn, ed. al-Iṣlāḥī, 2/588

Translation (ours)The third: guarding His blessings upon you and His goodness to you, for sins remove blessings, without doubt. No servant commits a sin except that a blessing from Allah leaves him in proportion to that sin. If he repents and returns, it comes back to him or something like it. If he persists, it does not return.

      Ibn al-Qayyim, Ṭarīq al-Hijratayn wa Bāb as-Saʿādatayn, ed. al-Iṣlāḥī, 2/589

Translation (ours)“Sins are the fire of blessings: they eat them the way fire eats firewood.”

      Qur'an

      Qur'an, Ibrāhīm 14:34

Sahih International“And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful.”

      Qur'an

      Qur'an, Fāṭir 35:3

Sahih International“O mankind, remember the favor of Allah upon you.”

      The drill

Write fifteen blessings Allah has given you. Be specific: not “family”, but the name of the person. Then answer the last question honestly.

Which of these would you trade for a few minutes of this sin?

None of them. So why would I risk them for this sin?

        Fear Allah and His punishment

        Ibn al-Qayyim, Ṭarīq al-Hijratayn wa Bāb as-Saʿādatayn, ed. al-Iṣlāḥī, 2/589

Translation (ours)The fourth: fear of Allah and dread of His punishment. This only becomes firm by believing Him in His promise and His threat, and by believing in Him, His Book and His Messenger. It grows stronger with knowledge and certainty, and weaker as they weaken.

When you are walking toward the sin, the nafs whispers: “Allah is the Most Generous, the Most Forgiving.” True. But He described Himself in one breath as forgiving and severe:

        Qur'an

        Qur'an, Ghāfir 40:3

Sahih International“The forgiver of sin, acceptor of repentance, severe in punishment.”

        Qur'an

        Qur'an, Fāṭir 35:28

Sahih International“And among people and moving creatures and grazing livestock are various colors similarly. Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Forgiving.”

The word here is khashyah (خشية): fear that comes from knowing who Allah is. The ʿulamāʾ meant here are not only people with many books. Ibn Kathīr explains:

        Tafsir

Ibn Kathīr, Tafsīr al-Qurʾān al-ʿAẓīm, ed. Sāmī as-Salāmah (Dār Ṭaybah), 6/544, on Fāṭir 35:28

Translation (ours)“Only the ʿulamāʾ who truly know Him fear Him as He deserves to be feared, because the more complete one’s knowledge of the Mighty, the All-Powerful, the All-Knowing, described with every attribute of perfection and the Beautiful Names, the greater and deeper one’s khashyah of Him becomes.” In the same place he quotes Saʿīd ibn Jubayr: “Khashyah is what stands between you and disobeying Allah.”

        Hadith

        Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 660

Translation (ours)Among the seven whom Allah shades on the Day there is no shade but His: “a man called by a woman of position and beauty, and he said: I fear Allah.”

        Qur'an

        Qur'an, an-Nāziʿāt 79:40-41

Sahih International“40But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination, 41Then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge.”

        The drill: read the warning

Part one: read these slowly. Several describe the people of the Fire in general. Read them to fear the road that leads there, not to despair.

        Hadith

        Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 3265

Translation (ours)“Your fire is one part of seventy parts of the fire of Jahannam.” It was said: O Messenger of Allah, this fire would have been enough. He said: “It has been made sixty-nine parts greater, each of them like its heat.”

        Qur'an, Muḥammad 47:15

Sahih International“Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey, in which they will have from all [kinds of] fruits and forgiveness from their Lord, like [that of] those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines?”

        Qur'an

        Qur'an, an-Nisāʾ 4:56

Sahih International“Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses - We will drive them into a Fire. Every time their skins are roasted through We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted in Might and Wise.”

        Qur'an

Sahih International“30[Allah will say], "Seize him and shackle him. 31Then into Hellfire drive him. 32Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him."”

        The grave

        Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1338

Translation (ours)“As for the disbeliever, or the hypocrite, he says: I do not know, I used to say what the people said. It is said to him: You neither knew nor followed. The drill: know who you would be disobeying

Part two: sit with seven of His Names that show His might, and finish each sentence for this sin.

Al-ʿAzīz: The Almighty. No one overpowers Him and no one escapes Him.

Al-Jabbār: The Compeller. His will is done, whatever anyone wants.

Al-Qahhār: The Subduer. Every creature is under His control, including my desire.

Al-Mutakabbir: The Supreme in greatness. Disobeying Him is never small.

Al-Qawiyy: The All-Strong. Nothing tires Him or slips past Him.

Al-Matīn: The Firm. His grip does not loosen.

Al-Malik: The King. I am in His kingdom while I sin, using His gifts.

        Love Allah

        Ibn al-Qayyim, Ṭarīq al-Hijratayn wa Bāb as-Saʿādatayn, ed. al-Iṣlāḥī, 2/589

Translation (ours)The fifth: love of Allah, the Glorified. It is among the strongest reasons for patience against opposing and disobeying Him, for the lover obeys the one he loves. The stronger the rule of love in the heart, the stronger its pull toward obedience and away from disobedience. Disobedience only comes from weakness in that love and its rule.

        Ibn al-Qayyim, Ṭarīq al-Hijratayn wa Bāb as-Saʿādatayn, ed. al-Iṣlāḥī, 2/590

Translation (ours)“There is a difference between one who leaves disobeying his master out of fear of his whip, and one who leaves it out of love for his master.”

Think about how each one works. Fear is strongest when you feel watched. Hope comes and goes. But love works whether anyone is there or not: you leave things for someone you love even when they would never find out. That is why love is the wall that holds when the room is empty.

        Hadith

        Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5999

Translation (ours)Seeing a mother clutch her baby, the Prophet ﷺ asked the Companions whether she would ever throw her child into a fire. Then he said: “Allah is more merciful to His servants than she is to her child.”

        Qur'an, Āl ʿImrān 3:31

Sahih International“Say, [O Muhammad], ‘If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins.’”

        The drill

Read these out loud, slowly. Then finish the “Didn’t He…?” lines with your own life.

Nobody loves me the way Allah does: not my friends, not my father, not my mother.

Nobody cares about me the way Allah does: not my friends, not my father, not my mother.

Nobody is as merciful to me as Allah is: not my friends, not my father, not my mother.

Nobody has covered my faults the way Allah has, again and again.

Nobody waits for me to come back the way Allah does.

        Didn’t He…

Hold yourself to a higher standard

          Ibn al-Qayyim, Ṭarīq al-Hijratayn wa Bāb as-Saʿādatayn, ed. al-Iṣlāḥī, 2/590

Translation (ours)The sixth: the honour of the soul, its purity, its worth, its dignity and its self-respect, refusing to choose the things that drag it down, lower its worth, reduce its rank, make it contemptible, and put it on the same level as the lowest of people.

          The drill

Write your standard. These are not wishes, they are who you are. Read them back when the pull comes.

Know what it will cost you

            Ibn al-Qayyim, Ṭarīq al-Hijratayn wa Bāb as-Saʿādatayn, ed. al-Iṣlāḥī, 2/591

Translation (ours)The seventh: strong knowledge of the evil end of sin, its ugly traces and the harm born from it: a darkened face, a darkened heart, its tightness and grief, its sorrow and pain, its constriction, intense anxiety and turmoil, a scattered state, and weakness in standing up to one’s enemy.

            Qur'an

Qur'an, al-Muṭaffifīn 83:14, as quoted by Ibn al-Qayyim in the same passage

Sahih International“No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning.”

            The drill

Ibn al-Qayyim lists these in the same chapter (2/591-594). Tick every one you have already tasted after this sin. Then answer the question.

            Do you want this again?

            Remember how short this is

            Ibn al-Qayyim, Ṭarīq al-Hijratayn wa Bāb as-Saʿādatayn, ed. al-Iṣlāḥī, 2/596-597

Translation (ours)The eighth: short hopes, and knowing how quickly he will move on: that he is like a traveller who entered a town already set on leaving it, or a rider who rested in the shade of a tree, then moved on and left it. Knowing how short his stay is, he is keen to drop whatever is heavy to carry, harms him and does not benefit him, and keen to leave with the best of what he has. Nothing benefits the heart more than short hopes, and nothing harms it more than procrastination and long hopes.

            Hadith

            Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6416

Translation (ours)The Prophet ﷺ took hold of Ibn ʿUmar’s shoulder and said: “Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a traveller.” And Ibn ʿUmar used to say: “When evening comes, do not wait for the morning, and when morning comes, do not wait for the evening. Take from your health for your sickness, and from your life for your death.”

            Qur'an

            Qur'an, al-Ḥadīd 57:20

Sahih International“Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.”

            The drill

Set the timer and think, slowly, through these. Then write.

            3:00

Cut the excess, guard your company

            Ibn al-Qayyim, Ṭarīq al-Hijratayn wa Bāb as-Saʿādatayn, ed. al-Iṣlāḥī, 2/597

Translation (ours)The ninth: avoiding excess in food, drink, clothing, sleep and mixing with people. The strength of the pull toward sin grows out of these excesses: they demand an outlet, the permissible becomes too narrow for them, and they spill over into the forbidden. Among the most harmful things for a servant are idleness and free time, because the soul never sits empty: if he does not occupy it with what benefits him, it will occupy him with what harms him, without doubt.

            Qur'an

            Qur'an, al-Kahf 18:28

Sahih International“And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance.”

            Hadith

            Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5534

Translation (ours)“The example of a good companion and a bad one is like the carrier of musk and the one blowing the blacksmith’s bellows. The musk carrier will either give you some, or you will buy from him, or at least you will smell something pleasant. The bellows-blower will either burn your clothes or you will smell something foul.”

            The drill

Find your excess in each of the five, and choose one cut for this week. Then plan your empty time before it plans you.

            Food
            Drink
            Clothing
            Sleep
            Mixing with people

My plan for the empty moments when the pull usually comes:

People, places and apps I will step away from:

            Strengthen the tree of iman

            Ibn al-Qayyim, Ṭarīq al-Hijratayn wa Bāb as-Saʿādatayn, ed. al-Iṣlāḥī, 2/597

Translation (ours)The tenth, which gathers all of these reasons: the firmness of the tree of iman in the heart. A servant’s patience against sins is only in proportion to the strength of his iman: the stronger his iman, the more complete his patience, and when iman weakens, patience weakens.

            Ibn al-Qayyim, Ṭarīq al-Hijratayn wa Bāb as-Saʿādatayn, ed. al-Iṣlāḥī, 2/597

Translation (ours)“Whoever thinks he can manage to leave sins and disobedience without firm, deep-rooted iman is mistaken.”

            The drill

Water the tree today. Tick what you have done, and write what you will do next.
